Genocide takes away malnourished Gazan infant

(MENAFN) In the devastated Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City, Palestinian mother Aayat al-Sardi sits in silent grief between two cribs—one now heartbreakingly empty. Her infant son, Ahmad, died four days ago from malnutrition. His twin brother, Mazen, remains alive, but barely, his frail body battling the same hunger that claimed his sibling.

Ahmad and Mazen were born prematurely in April, a bittersweet moment after years of miscarriages and fertility struggles. Instead of joy, their birth brought more pain, arriving amid a war that has ravaged Gaza and left its 2.4 million residents in a deepening humanitarian catastrophe.

Due to the dire conditions under Israel’s ongoing siege and closure of aid crossings since March 2, 2025, Aayat had to deliver her babies at seven months. The twins spent 40 days in intensive care at Al-Helou and Al-Rantisi hospitals—days Aayat described as “a blur of fear and helplessness,” as she was not allowed to visit them.

Once discharged, the family faced another crisis: there was no access to baby formula or nutritional supplements. Israel’s blockade, combined with restrictions on humanitarian aid, has led to severe shortages of food and medicine. By June, local clinics informed Aayat they had nothing left to offer her sons.

“The price of one can of therapeutic formula—if it’s even available—is about 200 shekels ($60),” Aayat told reporters. With no other options, she tried substituting different kinds of milk. But Ahmad’s small body couldn’t digest them.

“The last time he drank, the milk came out of his nose,” she recalled, tears streaming. “He couldn’t tolerate anything.”

Ahmad’s death is one of many as famine grips Gaza, where aid organizations have repeatedly warned of a full-blown humanitarian collapse. Mazen’s survival now hangs in the balance—another infant caught between life and a horrifying genocide that spares no one, not even newborns.
