Switzerland says conditions to recognize Palestine haven’t been met
“Recognition may come one day… when the conditions are fulfilled,” she said during a press conference with the Foreign Press Association in Bern. On whether genocide criteria have been met in Gaza, she noted that Switzerland condemns all violations of international law, including Israel’s interventions and Hamas attacks, adding that determinations of genocide are for international courts to decide.
Keller-Sutter also addressed cantonal decisions regarding medical care for children from Gaza. Seven children are currently receiving treatment across various cantons, while another 13 children and relatives are expected in November. She emphasized that healthcare decisions fall under cantonal authority, not the federal government.
On economic matters, Keller-Sutter highlighted concerns about global instability and stock market volatility, noting potential US tariffs of up to 39% on Swiss imports. She said Switzerland is negotiating with the US while seeking to diversify trade with countries such as India.
The Swiss president stressed the importance of maintaining strong ties with the EU, Switzerland’s largest trading partner. She said a consultation phase on a new package of agreements with the EU has concluded, with the dossier set to be submitted to Parliament, and a likely public vote in 2027.
Keller-Sutter underscored that Switzerland remains committed to multilateralism and free trade despite mounting global challenges.
