Israeli forces kill five Palestinians in Rafah tunnel incident

(MENAFN) The Israeli military reported Friday that it killed five Palestinians in Rafah city in southern Gaza, claiming they had emerged from a tunnel located in areas under Israeli control within the enclave.

According to the army, its Nahal Brigade combat team detected five armed men emerging from underground infrastructure in eastern Rafah, part of the southern Gaza Strip. Rafah lies within zones occupied by Israel east of the so-called “yellow line,” as defined by the ceasefire agreement implemented on Oct. 10.

Reports from Israeli media indicate that roughly 200 Hamas fighters remain trapped in a tunnel in Rafah. Tel Aviv has reportedly not complied with requests from the Palestinian group and mediators to permit their safe passage to territory controlled by Hamas elsewhere in the Strip.

Since October 2023, general reporting indicates that the Israeli military’s operations in Gaza have killed nearly 70,000 people, the majority of them women and children, injured over 170,800, and caused extensive destruction across the territory.
