S. Africa’s leader Palestine’s self-determination to bring just in region

(MENAFN) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Monday that only the recognition of Palestinian self-determination and fundamental human rights can lead to a just and lasting peace in the region. Speaking at the 5th National General Council of the African National Congress (ANC) in Ekurhuleni, he criticized Israel for frequently violating the ceasefire agreement with Hamas that took effect on Oct. 10.

Ramaphosa noted that Israel’s actions in Gaza prompted South Africa to bring a case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in December 2023, alleging violations of the Genocide Convention. Since the start of hostilities on Oct. 7, 2023, more than 70,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in Gaza.

He called for an immediate ceasefire and meaningful negotiations to establish a sovereign Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel. Additionally, Ramaphosa highlighted South Africa’s involvement in other international peace efforts, including the crises in Sudan and Ukraine.
