UNRWA Chief Issues Warning Regarding Israeli Actions in West Bank
The warning highlights mounting international concern over recent developments in the territory.
Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner-general of UNRWA, stated that these initiatives open the door to “accelerated settlement expansion” and further erode hopes for Palestinians. He cautioned that such moves could significantly damage the already fragile outlook for a just and lasting resolution.
“The measures amount to a recipe for increased control, hopelessness and violence,” Lazzarini wrote late Tuesday on the US social media platform X.
He emphasized that the adopted steps risk deepening instability and entrenching despair among affected communities.
Lazzarini also stressed that the rulings establish troubling precedents that may carry broader international ramifications, extending beyond the immediate regional context.
His comments followed the Israeli Security Cabinet’s approval on Sunday of a series of actions designed to modify the legal and administrative structure in the occupied West Bank, reinforcing what critics describe as unlawful Israeli authority.
As reported by Israeli media, the approved measures involve canceling legislation that previously prohibited the sale of West Bank land to private Israeli citizens, opening sealed land registry files, and transferring jurisdiction over construction permits in a settlement cluster near Hebron from a Palestinian local authority to Israel’s civil administration.
