Tent Fire in Gaza Claims Two Young Lives, Injures Their Mother

(MENAFN) A fire in a tent sheltering displaced Palestinians in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, claimed the lives of a 16-year-old girl and her 2-year-old brother while injuring their mother and another young sibling.

Shahd Mahmoud al-Medhun died at the scene, and her brother Adam later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital after being transported in critical condition, according to health sources.

Their 43-year-old mother, Enam al-Medhun, and one-year-old Sidra were also injured and taken to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.

Witnesses reported that the fire began while the mother was preparing food and quickly spread, destroying both the family’s tent and a neighboring one.

Authorities initially confirmed that a 16-year-old girl had died, and her mother and two siblings were injured in the late Wednesday blaze.

In Gaza, widespread destruction from past Israeli attacks has left hundreds of thousands of residents living in tents and temporary shelters without secure housing. Persistent power outages and fuel shortages compel many to rely on rudimentary cooking and heating methods, which dramatically increase the risk of fires in tents lacking basic safety measures, putting lives at severe risk.
