Investigation Reports Thousands of Palestinians “Vaporized” in Gaza
The special investigation, titled The Rest of the Story, drew on data collected by Gaza’s Civil Defense teams from the start of the conflict in October 2023, relying on field documentation rather than estimates.
Mahmoud Basal, a Civil Defense spokesperson, explained that rescue teams determine the number of missing individuals using a “method of elimination” at strike sites. This involves comparing the known number of people in a targeted location with the remains recovered afterward.
“If a family tells us there were five people inside, and we only recover three intact bodies, we only classify the remaining two as ‘evaporated’ after an exhaustive search yields nothing but biological traces,” Basal said, noting that such traces could include blood spray or small fragments like scalps.
He emphasized that individuals are only classified as “evaporated” after thorough searches of rubble, hospitals, and morgues fail to produce any identifiable remains.
