Gazans Find Solace in Early Morning “Winter Swimming”
Despite the winter chill, young men and elderly residents take to the water each day, seeking physical renewal, mental relief, and improved immunity. The swimmers practice exercises and simple routines, carving out brief moments of joy amid ongoing hardships.
Not far from Israeli naval patrols that enforce a blockade and target local fishermen, the group gathers at the shoreline under the guidance of swimming coach Mohammed Mahra. He leads his trainees in fitness drills as the first rays of sunrise shimmer across the water.
Mahra highlighted the widespread suffering endured by Gazans, including loss, deprivation, and displacement, yet emphasized the importance of fostering hope and positivity. “We’ve grown used to enjoying swimming in the morning, in summer and winter alike,” he said. “We insist on restoring vitality and positive energy on the seashore, which has borne witness to the tragedies and pain that befell Gaza.”
He added, “As Gaza has always shown the world that it can achieve the impossible, here we are creating joy through our determination from the heart of Gaza’s life-filled sea, despite the pain we carry.”
Mahra also noted that their practice continues despite limited resources, pointing out, "The (Israeli) occupation destroyed everything.”
