Palestinian Commission Accuses Israeli Prisons of Hindering Ramadan Fasting

(MENAFN) The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ Affairs has accused Israeli prison authorities of obstructing Palestinian detainees from observing the holy month of Ramadan “at the right time.”

In a statement released Saturday night, the commission said that authorities at Ofer Prison, near Ramallah, fail to notify prisoners of the dawn and sunset prayer times, preventing them from properly starting and ending their daily fasts.

“Prisoners observe Ramadan without suhoor (a pre-dawn meal), while iftar (a fasting-breaking meal) turns into a long ordeal,” said Khaled Mahajneh, a lawyer with the commission, speaking to the official Voice of Palestine. He added that Palestinian detainees in Gilboa Prison were not informed about the start of Ramadan, with one prisoner learning of it only during an Israeli court session.

Mahajneh stated: “For more than two years, Palestinian detainees are forced to eat only food scraps for iftar. The occupation is trying to erase the joy of Palestinian prisoners of religious occasions, and deliberately makes the joy of their families incomplete and painful over the abuse and torture of their sons behind bars.”

Currently, more than 9,300 Palestinians are held in Israeli prisons, including approximately 350 children. Human rights organizations report that detainees face mistreatment including torture, starvation, and denial of medical care, which has resulted in multiple deaths.
