Palestinians Say Israeli Forces Attack Christian Event Near Bethlehem
(MENAFN) As stated by reports, Palestinian sources said that Israeli forces carried out an assault on participants in a Christian celebration on Tuesday evening in the town of al-Khader, west of Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank.
A Palestinian news agency reported that troops targeted crowds marking St. George’s Day in the old town area, using tear gas and stun grenades to disperse attendees.
The Palestine Red Crescent Society said its teams transferred one injured person to hospital after he was beaten inside the Monastery of St. George.
Local activist Ahmad Salah told a media outlet that hundreds of residents had gathered for the event, which is locally known as “Eid al-Khader” (the Feast of St. George).
He added that the celebration traditionally brings together both Muslim and Christian residents of the village and is regarded as an important cultural and seasonal event for the community.
Each year on May 5–6, churches following the Eastern calendar in Bethlehem, Beit Sahour, and Beit Jala observe the feast of St. George through prayers and religious services, with Muslim residents also participating in various aspects of the festivities, including attendance and local commerce.
